Problem
Readers wanted newsletters but had no way in.
Tempo is a free news platform that has a lot of news topics. Currently Tempo has a newsletter feature, but user cant register on website or app, users are registered through manually by input one by one, and users don't know how to choose which newsletter topic they like
Goal
More subscribers, each on the topics they care about.
How to increase the number of newsletters subscribers, and how users subscribe to their preferred newsletter topics
Empathize
Readers want news on their own terms.
The first stage is empathize, namely trying to empathize, understand what is experienced, felt by the user. The method used is to gather insight through sticky notes.
Competitive Analysis
How Kompas, CXO Media and NYT handle sign-ups.
Research method by comparing businesses with competitors. The benefit of this method is that you can find out competitors' business behavior comparatively. In this study, we try to compare 3 companies that have newsletter subscription services.
Kompas
When you first come to the Kompas website, a newsletter list popup will appear. Users are asked to enter their first name and email address. Pop up only appears once, when closed the pop up will disappear & will not appear again.
CXO Media
If you want to subscribe to the newsletter, users can find it in the footer of the website. Later, users only need to enter their email to subscribe to the newsletter.
New York Times
NYT place the menu for newsletter subscriptions in the footer of the website, only the form is different, NYT uses text.
Define
No menu, no topic choice, manual sign-ups.
Define is the stage for determining what problem you want to solve. From the various findings that exist when empathizing, the author determines that the problems faced by users are:
- 1There is no menu that functions to subscribe to the newsletter.
- 2Because there is no such menu, newsletter registration is done manually and the specific topic you want is not known.
Ideate
Make subscribing obvious and quick.
Ideate is a stage where we can collect as many ideas as possible as solutions to the problems we have set. What The Option:
- A clear way inProvides a way to subscribe to the newsletter.
- Fewer stepsSimplifies the newsletter subscription process.
In my mind i imagined to design and optimize the newsletter widget so that it can; attracting users, making it easier to subscribe to news according to the topics they like.
Design Flow
A widget on the homepage, then a clear confirmation.
1Newsletter Widget
- The newsletter is placed on the homepage. The homepage was chosen because this page is the user's "starting door" to reading the news.
- The placement of the widget itself is top right so it is attractive, easy to read and follows a z pattern (from left to right), so after the user reads the "selected news" he will find a widget to subscribe to the newsletter.
- To subscribe, users are asked to enter their email, and choose what topics they want.
2Pop Up Successful Subscription
- If the user has filled in the fields in the widget, a successful newsletter subscription popup will appear.
- The notification is also sent to the user's email as proof of successful subscription to the newsletter at the time.
- Users can also close the popup via button
Design Decision
Small choices grounded in UX laws.
New Tag
- Von Restorff EffectThe “new” tag is used as a differentiator to provide information and attract users that there is a new widget that functions to register for newsletters.
Input Field
- Hick's LawUsers only need to enter their email and choose a topic to make the registration process faster. (Hick's Law).
- Law of ProximitySpacing between the input title and the field is made close together (Law of proximity).
- Easy topic pickingNewsletter topics are sorted alphabetically. and can choose 1 or more topics.
Limitation
Short research time, more testing needed.
Further iteration and testing is needed to find out user needs. The research time is short so there is still a lot that can still be explored. The future, to be more consistent, each UI component needs to be made atomic first.
